Sudaka and Sadhita, members of the Triratna Buddhist Order are running the 200 hour Foundation Module of their Yoga teacher training based on Buddhist principles.
"Our course trains confident and knowledgeable yoga teachers. We draw on the inspiration and wisdom of Buddhist teachings (Dharma) which informs our approach to Classical Hatha Yoga. Our training offers a practical vehicle for spiritual transformation. We are principally concerned in providing conditions for the development and deepening of greater awareness, confidence and self-discovery. We draw on our extensive yoga and meditation experience, 40 years between the two of us."
"We emphasise the cultivation of mindfulness (sati) or awareness through Hatha yoga and meditation practices. We offer a comprehensive training with Certification for 200 and 500 hours through the IYN. (Independent Yoga Network - through which you can obtain Professional Insurance wherever you live (except Canada and the USA)"
At the end of the course graduates can teach under the auspices of BODHIYOGA.
We encourage our students to attend on-going training yoga and meditation retreats.
Especially recommended is taking the ten days Module 2 to develop their Teacher Training into a 500 hour Certification. The Teacher Training modules are located in Spain, run with a maximum of 12 participants to facilitate an intimate and effective learning environment, with plenty of contact between students and teachers.
For several reasons we have chosen Solterreno for our Foundation course:
Solterreno is a small retreat centre up in the hills behind the Mediterranean coast near Denia/Javea. The nearest large cities are Valencia and Alicante. It is situated near to a village in a terraced valley well known for its cherry trees and lush vegetation. It is accessible and easy to get there!
Solterreno is run by a Buddhist colleague and friend, Bodhin, his partner and other collaborators. Having run a number of shorter workshops and retreats in Solterreno it has proved a comfortable and spacious venue as well as providing a friendly, restful and intimate environment.
Solterreno is the venue of the 21 days Module 1 Foundation Course which forms the 200 hour basis of the Bodhiyoga teacher training programme.
The ten day Module 2 is run in Ecodharma in the Pyrenees. Other one week retreats and courses are organised in Ecodharma, at Dhanakosa in Scotland, as well as other venues like Kabak in southern Turkey.
About the 21 day Foundation course in Solterreno
The Module 1 training forms the heart of the Bodhiyoga teacher teaching programme and we will establish a steady rhythm of study, classes, practice and rest over the course of the three weeks in Solterreno. For a fully detailed syllabus look at the syllabus link of the Bodhiyoga website.
The Foundation course is designed to establish any serious practitioner and teacher in the Bodhiyoga principles and practises of meditation, classical Hatha yoga and study of some key Buddhist teachings.
The course unfolds in three phases.
- The first week, establishing students in their meditation and yoga practice
- the second, we explore the key teachings around mindfulness and
- the third, exploring teachings around lovingkindness.
Sudaka and Sadhita alternate leading the morning sessions, taking students through a variety of posture practice sequences; dividing postures into 11 major groups;
Group 0. gentle supine floor postures / leg stretches
Group 1. Surya Namaskar - Sun Salutations, heat building dynamic sequences
Group 2. Standing postures
Group 3. Forward bends / folds
Group 4. Supine core strengthening,
Group 5. Rotations, twists
Group 6. Back-bends
Group 7. Inversions, shoulder stand and headstand
Group 8. Savasana - relaxation techniques
Group 9. Lateral movements
Group 10. arm, shoulder and upper body-work
Each week includes a Restorative/Yin style session.
In the second and third week there is directed study and practical application of the key mindfulness and lovingkindness (metta, maitri) teachings of Buddhism, which underpin the spiritual orientation of Bodhiyoga teacher training. We use "Living with Awareness" and "Living with Kindness"; texts by Sangarakshita to draw out these teachings.
Sadhita leads an introduction to Anatomy and Physiology useful to yoga practitioners and teachers over a number of sessions.
Every afternoon time is dedicated to analyses and teaching methodology of the poses practiced in the morning sequence given plenty of opportunity to clarify and begin to master the core postures of the Bodhiyoga teacher training and how to communicate them to others.
The evening sessions are talks of a more inspirational nature exploring meditation, the yoga tradition and yogic lifestyle as well as some Question & Answer periods.
Certification & Professional Insurance
Bodhiyoga teacher training is offered to the highest standards. Completion of the course curriculum entitles you to either a 300 or 600 hours teacher training Certificate. This will allow you to register with the Independent Yoga Network (IYN) Yoga Register. This is an internationally recognised organisation for Yoga teachers and Yoga schools also recognised by the Fitness Industry and will entitle you to obtain professional insurance and apply separately with REPS (Register of Exercise Professionals).
Being a member of IYN (after you are Certified with Bodhiyoga this is a straightforward process) means you can take out Professional Insurance with them. The Insurance now covers policy holders domiciled anywhere in the world and teaching anywhere in the world except the USA and Canada.
Note
We have chosen the Independent Yoga Network (IYN) Yoga Register because we recognise that it is important for yoga teachers and prospective yoga teachers to have some support from the wider yoga community. The IYN is supporting yoga teachers to maintain diversity and integrity in their approach to yoga teaching and methodology. Teachers can also acquire Professional Insurance through this organisation.
Time off
Every afternoon there is a couple hours to take a rest or walk in the local area and take a dip in the pool. We finish the last evening activity around 21.30 giving plenty of time for participants to relax and wind down. Every week we practice a Restorative yoga sequence adding to the richness of the learning experience as well as resting the body.
We have programmed in two days off over the 3 weeks. After a morning practice students can take time out from the programme and we organise trips down to the coast and nearby villages.
